Purulia Travel Guide

Purulia sits on the western edge of West Bengal, right where the state begins to feel rugged and earthy. Think red soil, ancient hills, tribal culture, lakes tucked between forests, and winter air that feels impossibly clear. If you want a trip that’s slower, quieter, and closer to nature, this district delivers.

Why Visit Purulia

Here’s the thing: Purulia isn’t about fancy resorts or crowd-pulling monuments. What it really offers is landscape—Ajodhya Hills, deep forests, dramatic sunsets—and a living cultural heritage, especially Chhau dance and tribal festivals. It’s ideal for nature lovers, trekkers, photographers, and anyone who wants an offbeat Bengal experience.

Best Time to Visit

November to February
Winter is perfect. Pleasant days, chilly nights, and clear views of the hills.

March–April
Good for the famous Chhau festival in Charida/Ajodhya region.

Avoid June–September
Heavy rain can make parts of the forest and hill routes tricky.

How to Reach Purulia

By Train

Plenty of trains connect Howrah to Purulia Junction. You can also reach nearby stations like Barabhum, Jhalda, or Anara depending on your itinerary.

By Road

From Kolkata, it’s roughly 300–320 km (7–8 hours). The road via NH19 – Asansol – Raghunathpur is usually smoother.

Top Places to Visit

1. Ajodhya Hills

The star of Purulia. Rolling hills, tribal villages, freshwater streams, pine stretches, and surprisingly lovely viewpoints.

Must-see spots inside Ajodhya:

Upper & Lower Dam – calm water, great light during sunset

Bamni Falls – steep walk down, worth every step

Marble Lake – emerald water inside an old quarry

Pakhi Pahar – giant bird carvings on the rock face

Sita Kund + Binda Pahar – quiet, good for sunrise

2. Charida Village

Known as the Mask Village. This is where the iconic Purulia Chhau masks are made. You can watch the artisans shape, paint, and decorate the masks.

3. Joychandi Pahar

A short climb rewards you with a sweeping panoramic view. Also known for being the shooting spot of Satyajit Ray’s Hirak Rajar Deshe.

4. Baranti (Muradi) Lake

A long, serene reservoir between two low hills. Ideal for a slow evening walk, photography, or simply sitting and watching the colours change.

5. Garpanchkot

A scenic forested region with the ruins of an old fort, a peaceful lake, and a backdrop of the Panchet Hill. Very popular for short weekend stays.

6. Kashipur Rajbari & Surroundings

If you like old structures, this area has remnants of royal estates, temples, and quiet countryside roads.

7. Murguma Dam

A lovely dam surrounded by hills, tribal villages, and deep green stretches. Less crowded than Ajodhya.
